How to Make Iced Tea - Little Girl in SummerIt’s iced tea season! As summer rapidly approaches and the heat rises, one of the best ways to cool off is to indulge in a refreshing glass of iced tea. But if you’re wondering how to make iced tea, especially with loose leaf, then please read on! There are multiple methods, depending on your time and patience.

How to Make Iced Tea: Method #1 — Cold Brewing

Cold brew tea in the fridge. This will result in a smooth concoction that’s less bitter and lower in caffeine. This method works really well if you have lots of patience.

  • We recommend you add at least 2 times the amount of recommended tea per serving, because cold-brewed tea is often less powerful than hot tea.
  • Add cool or room temperature filtered water and steep in the fridge 6-12 hours (or overnight).
  • When it reaches desired strength, add ice and enjoy!

How to Make Iced Tea: Method #2 — Brew Hot, Then Chill

For this method, steep your tea as directed with hot water. After it’s finished brewing, remove the tea leaves and stick your tea in the fridge or freezer to cool. After a few hours, pour over ice, and enjoy!

Steeping tips:

  • Follow the directions on the package for time/temperature/leaf quantity recommendations.
  • If you wish to sweeten your brew, add that in while it’s hot. Many sweeteners dissolve better before the tea cools.

How to Make Iced Tea: Method #3 — Hot Concentrate

This method is best if you don’t want to wait a long time for your iced tea! Essentially, you brew an extra strong tea concentrate, and then add ice.  The ice melts, cooling the tea, and also diluting it to regular strength.

Steeping tips:

  • For each serving of loose leaf tea, add ½ the amount of hot water. (A standard serving is 8 ounces, so half of that would be 4 ounces, or ½ cup, of water.) Multiply up for larger quantities.
  • Steep the tea leaves the suggested amount of time. The time will vary from 2-5+ minutes. But don’t worry… each CommuniTea Center tea has time/temperature recommendations on the package.
  • When time is up, remove the tea leaves.
  • If you like to sweeten your tea, add sugar/honey/stevia/etc. while your tea is hot, so it dissolves better.
  • Pour tea over ice. Make sure to stir so it cools evenly.
  • Enjoy!
